Junior Jesse Skelton rules in club champions golf

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

The younger set is taking over men?s golfing in Manitoba.

Seventeen-year-old Jesse Skelton, of Bel Acres, won the Manitoba Golf Association?s club champions tournament last weekend, fashioning rounds of 68 and 76 at Gimli?s Links at the Lake course.

Skelton’s combined score of 144 will entitles him to be known for the next year as the best male golfer at all of the province’s clubs. He was two shots lower than Dave Michaleski of Larters whose rounds of 70-76-146 earned him the runner-up position.

This has been a banner season for young Skelton who has just started Grade 12 at Winnipeg’s Silver Heights Collegiate. Earlier this summer, he won his first Manitoba Junior Golf Championship plus two other junior tournaments.

Skelton’s 68 was the lowest individual score recorded over the two rounds at the par 72 Links layout. With a year of junior eligibility still remaining, he looked like a future professional in the men’s field composed of golfers of all ages.

The PGA tour, however, is not on his agenda.

After high school, I plan to go to the University of British Columbia to study architecture, he said. Golf is primarily a hobby, but I would like to be one of the best amateurs in Canada. And you can play year-round in B.C.

Skelton’s caddy was his father Rik while another youthful competitor — B.J. Neufeld, the Links club champion — enlisted father Chris to tote the bag. Although the Neufelds are notable mostly as a curling dynasty, B.J finished a respectable fourth, with scores of 77 and 75 for a 152 total.

Allan Wheeler, of Rossmere, and Keith Fawcett, of Selkirk, were first and second, respectively, in the senior men?s division.

The women’s provincial club champion was Judi Lidstone, of Elmhurst, with rounds of 72-77-149. Alicia Michalchuk, of Larters, was runner-up, while former Matlock cottager Noreen Stewart. of Southwood, took the senior ladies title edging Anette Durica, of Niakwa.

Lidstone’s performance showed her familiarity with the Gimli course. The former Winnipeg and District ladies titlist had previously played at Links in Manitoba Mixed Championships.

The course is in good shape and there are big improvements every time I come out here, Lidstone said. ?The only drawback is that the greens are slower than in the city.

The criticism of the greens was echoed by Skelton.

They were so slow that it was hard to putt, he said. Maybe they don?t cut them down enough.

Besides Neufeld and Fawcett, there were nine other Interlake golfers competing in the club champions tournament.

They were Ted Chop, Links; James Rousse, Bernie Majewski, both South Interlake; Kelly Burnett, Teulon; Rob Erickson, Selkirk; Beverly Sigurdson, Hecla; Cely Santos, South Interlake; and Bev Ostash and Charlene Fox, both Selkirk.

Mogg has eye of the Tiger Teaching pro who might be Woods’ next swing guru visits Pine Ridge

Saturday, September 4th, 2010

Was that Tiger Woods’ next coach on the range at Pine Ridge Golf Club on Tuesday

Maybe.

We likely won’t know the answer for some time, but that definitely was Brian Mogg conducting a clinic and having lunch with Players Cup sponsors.

Mogg’s name surfaced recently on a Sports Illustrated list of candidates to succeed the recently departed Hank Haney as Tiger’s swing and golf guru.

Among the eight names other than Tiger’s own, Mogg was listed at 30-1, while Canadian Sean Foley seems to be the consensus favourite at this point.

Mogg wasn’t shy about the possibilities on Tuesday.

“Delicately, humbly, because I’ve been with John Cook for a long, long time, and because I teach a mile away from Isleworth and I’ve got a lot of Isleworth members and because I’m with Nike, I would imagine it’s not a big stretch to say, if Tiger’s going to choose a coach — and that’s a big word, if — I would likely be on the short list because of all of those factors,” Mogg said.

“And, I’ve spent a decent amount of time with Tiger in the past. Common sense is I’d probably be on some short list and whether there’s truth to it or not, we’ll have to wait and see.”

Other than time constraints due to his thriving teaching business based in Orlando, Mogg sounded like he wouldn’t shy away from the challenge.

“I’ve spent enough time with Tiger, not in the near past but in the past, (that) I understand what he wants and how he would operate should he hire another coach,” he said.

“The reality is that Tiger right now needs friends around him and he’s not going to go hire a coach right now because he’s been burned from a trust standpoint from all the scandals and all that happened.

“So to hire a coach, someone he doesn’t know, barely knows or might know a little bit, he’s not going to do that. Maybe I’d be a little higher up the trust factor than some of the other guys he just flat doesn’t know, but to invite someone into his inner circle right now — that’s why he’s not going to hire a coach right now.”

Mogg seems certain that Woods will go it alone for a while while he tries to get his game and his life back on track.

“If I had to go get a golf lesson from somebody right now, he’d be one of the guys I would call,” Mogg said. “His eye is that good. He’s awesome.

“I would digress and say I don’t like what he did with Hank. He’s gotten off track for the last five or six years mechanically. But in terms of an eye, and I’ve been around him and when I worked with John Cook and Tiger’s come up, he’s had some great comments to make.”

Mogg has been a frequent visitor to Winnipeg in the past. His grandmother was from St. James and the former PGA Tour player used to be a regular at the Canadian Tour stop here. He likely still holds the local record for consecutive cuts made, 14, at the Manitoba Open/MTS Classic.

The native of Tacoma, Wash., enthralled the Canadian Tour event sponsors Tuesday with swing tips on the range and tour stories — a particularly good one was about Tiger vs. Phil at table tennis — over lunch.

He’s taken an unusual route to a reputation among the elite teachers in the game. It’s rare a tour player evolves into instruction at such a high level.

“Falling into teaching after playing the Tour for several years, I don’t really view it as teaching, I view it as helping people,” Mogg said. “Some of it is technical, some of it is mechanical and some of it is hugely more mental or preparation.

“When you’re helping people, it doesn’t feel like you’re working.”

Having worked with the likes of John Cook, Bart Bryant, Skip Kendall, D.A. Points, Joey Sindelar and even former MTS Classic champ Lee Williamson, Mogg is currently enjoying new-found status after one of his clients, Korean Y.E. Yang, beat Woods for the PGA Championship last August.

“Every victory has been cool,” he said of the 22 tour wins he can claim by his players. “After 21 of these victories, Y.E.’s victory at the PGA is equal to or surpasses the others combined, and that’s not to knock the John Cook wins and things like that.

“The hoopla, the attention, the uniqueness that he’s the first Asian, the first to take Tiger down, the first that he came from behind to take Tiger down and how that’s reverberated throughout the golf community and the world, that one victory alone, the attention, hoopla, recognition, has surpassed everything else that ever happened for me.”

Annual Mayor’s Golf tournament and Family Fun Day recognized nationally by Canadian Tire

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

This newspaper earned one of four national awards on May 28 when Canadian Tire JumpStart recognized the staff for its fundraising events for local families.

This Week has raised more than $68,000 with its annual family fun day in Peterborough and annual golf tournaments co-hosted by the mayor since 2003.

“It is amazing that our small golf tournament makes such a huge difference to children in our area,” general manager Mary Babcock said after accepting the award from Martha Billes, the founder and chairman of Canadian Tire JumpStart.

“We are so lucky that we have the very best team to pull such an event together every year.”

Since This Week has so many youth carriers, this is a great way to give back to families in the community, she added.

Ms Babcock was in good company as the other awards went to the Manitoba government for supplying bags full of sports equipment and two groups of Canadian Tire employees who started fundraising programs for JumpStart, including climbing Mount Kilimanjaro.

“As a community newspaper, we’re delighted to organize an event that benefits local youth through the Canadian Tire JumpStart Program and that partners with local municipal leaders,” adds publisher Bruce Danford.

All three area Canadian Tire operators attended the award ceremony — Craig Salkeld and Marcus Weinbrecht, associate dealers from both Peterborough stores and general manager John Fox from the Lindsay store. All three say they are proud to see so many children helped by the money that is raised here and stays here.

“It’s an exceptional honour,” Mr. Weinbrecht says.

“It’s a very select group so it’s a very big deal for Peterborough This Week to get this award. It’s a reflection of the work that Mary Babcock and Kirtus Evoy put in to support JumpStart. As a business partner, we’re thrilled to work with them and we’ll work together for years to come.”

Mr. Salkeld expressed his thanks for the many hours of work put in by This Week’s staff to support a program that puts kids into recreation programs.

“I’ve been in other markets and have never seen an outside partner get so involved,” he adds.

Mr. Fox was also pleased to see This Week recognized for its fundraisers.

“We have a lot of respect for Mary and the team at This Week,” he says.

“They’ve been great partners to work with. The award is long overdue and well-deserved.”

Golfers out in full force to see Weir

Friday, August 27th, 2010

It’s a spectacular day to raise money for the Childrens Hospital Foundation of Manitoba.

Golfers young and old were out in full force this morning at St. Charles Country Club, joining PGA Tour star and Masters champion Mike Weir for the fourth annual Mike Weir Miracle Golf Drive For Kids.

The Mike Weir Foundation has set a goal of raising $10 million across Canada for children’s care.

Teams of players flooded the MacKenzie and Ross Nines early this morning for 18 holes of action. Sunday night at a kick-off reception, four groups successfully bid to play a few holes with Weir today.

Later in the morning, 18 local professionals and 54 kids assembled at St. Charles to participate in the nine-hole Safeway Junior pro-am.

All the players got to meet and have their photos taken with Weir before starting their event.

“That was exciting meeting him, shaking his hand and taking pictures with him,” said Brynn Todd, 12. “I just said hi, but it was so exciting.”

Todd was one of the lucky junior members at St. Charles who won a draw to play in the pro-am. Other juniors around the area earned their spots in club competitions or in contests.

“This was so cool to meet someone in the pros and on TV and to see that you actually get to meet him,” Todd added. “This will be fun but I’m nervous, too.”

Weir, who was a junior obsessed with golf long before he ever won a major championship, hit the first shot of the pro-am and spoke to the juniors, pros and parents assembled around the first tee at St. Charles’ Woods Nine.”Keep working hard,” Weir said. “Because you never know what can happen.”

The fund raising-day continues with a clinic by Weir this afternoon, then tonight’s gala dinner at the Ft. Garry hotel.

Youth-senior golf tournament planned

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

Perhaps mutual frustration can help bring seniors and youth together.

A golf tournament is being planned for June 3 at the Vulcan Golf and Country Club to help break down barriers between the two age groups.

?The youth and seniors are so far apart, each one seems to be leery of the other,? said Tina Wideen with Family and Community Support Services (FCSS).

Teenagers might seem ?scary,? but that doesn?t make them bad people, said Wideen. They?re finding their own identity, just like adults did when they were growing up, she said.

Wideen would like to be able to pair seniors and youth on teams.

There are plenty of seniors who golf, and there?s a push to increase the number of youth golfers, she said.

Wideen is still working out the details but hopes that the event won?t cost participants any money. She is attempting to line up sponsors.

If there is a cost, anyone who couldn?t afford to participate otherwise would be subsidized, she said.

Anyone 50-plus or 17 and under can sign up for the event, said Wideen. For information or to register, call FCSS (485-2192) and ask for Wideen or Ashley Fath.

Sign up sheets are also to be available at the golf course, senior centre, County Central High School, and perhaps other places around town, said Wideen. Watch out for flyers for further information.

Participants are to meet at 1 p.m. on June 3, with a buffet to follow nine holes of golf.

?I think it?ll be a lot of fun,? said Wideen.

Foundation: ‘Weir in the money’

Friday, August 20th, 2010

Golfer raises $625K for Children’s Hospital Canada’s Masters champ draws a crowd in Winnipeg

The amount of money, $625,000, is staggering.

These are not the best of economic times. The appearance, golf and a gala dinner, took barely more than 24 hours. Though it looks good on Winnipeg, to many, this does not sound like Winnipeg, known to be tight with a dollar and eager for a deal.

But this was the amount of money raised for the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba at Monday’s Mike Weir Miracle Golf Drive for Kids.

This is the power of the brand that is Mike Weir.

The 2003 Masters champion, Canada’s biggest golf star, attracted the well-heeled, a solid cross-section of the business community and both the avid and casual fans to St. Charles Country Club on Monday.

Weir’s galleries numbered in the hundreds by midday — for a Texas scramble where he played a few holes with a quartet of groups who, at a Sunday night pre-golf party, successfully bid thousands of dollars for his company.

Golf event officials said they had no trouble selling out all the top sponsorships and the foursomes at $10,000 each.

By the time the 40-year-old native of Sarnia, Ont., was done shaking hands, being photographed and convincing all to open their wallets on Monday, the Miracle Golf Drive for Kids had its second most successful day in four years.

Saskatoon’s pre-recession Weir event still tops the list at more than $1.18 million but the main goal the golfer’s charitable foundation has set is to raise $10 million for children’s health-care causes across the country.

“The children’s charities, that’s near and dear to everybody’s heart,” said Weir’s brother Jim, the CEO of Mike Weir Wine and a key member of the inner circle. “It resonates. Everyone in our family’s been lucky enough to have healthy children but we feel it’s important to give back.

“Winnipeg really (got) around this, like Saskatoon and London and Halifax before, but the bottom line is about helping children, so when you go to somebody and say you want to do an event to help children… yeah, Mike has power but no matter what you do, people are going step up for that. It’s the way we are as Canadians.”

The Weir franchise, which took off after the Masters victory, includes the winery, a clothing line, the foundation dedicated to children’s causes and now Weir Golf Design.

“There is a lot of thought that goes into the Weir brand, that’s for sure,” said Jim Weir. “It all starts with him though, with the man himself and the things that are important to him.

trans Foundation: Weir in the money

“The winery, for example. We started it up but he wanted to figure out a way to generate some money for the foundation through the winery. He said he didn’t need to make any money off the winery, he wanted to raise money.

“He’s very, very grounded like that. Everyone who works within the winery, the foundation, the clothing line, whatever it is, we follow his lead. He is the brand. It’s always about helping other people.”

That’s one of the key reasons a major golf organization has become one of Weir’s foundation partners.

“Mike Weir’s playing achievements, the Masters victory in particular, have positioned him as a national hero throughout the Canadian golf industry,” said Jeff Calderwood, CEO of the National Golf Course Owners Association Canada, who attended the Winnipeg event. “In addition, his strong family values and dedication to children’s health make him an ideal role model athlete for all Canadians.

“And for these reasons, the NGCOA Canada was proud to align our own charitable fundraising initiatives with the Mike Weir Miracle Golf Drive for Kids.”

Weir, the eight-time PGA Tour winner and Presidents Cup team player, humbly accepts much of the credit but is reluctant to hype his star power.

“I don’t, really. I don’t think about it,” he said Monday. “I’m happy we have such a great turnout and we’re able to raise some significant dollars for the hospital.”

His brother Jim, though, said there’s no getting around it.

“It’s very much there,” Jim said. “I’m lucky to see it all the time but it doesn’t get lost on me. The volunteers around here today, people who took time off from work, they were just so friendly, they’re thanking us for coming in to raise money for the hospital.

“Last week in Toronto, we went for a hospital visit and it was amazing to watch the children when he comes walking into a room. You might wonder if the 2003 Masters isn’t a long time ago and these kids are 8, 9, 10, but they still know who he is and the power of him walking into a room is really, really cool.

“Really, it’s almost the power of what that green jacket brought. Just amazing.”

“The Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba welcomes MTS Allstream as a Platinum Sponsor of the Mike Weir Miracle Golf Drive for Kids, as well as the many MTS Allstream employees who have committed their time as volunteers,” said event co-chair Curtis Gray. “We thank MTS Allstream, once again, for coming forward to support the fundraising efforts of the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba, which will directly impact the advancement of knowledge and care in the fields of child health and child health research in Manitoba and across Canada.”

Weir here to make new memories Tour vet playing for charity at local event

Tuesday, August 10th, 2010

Nearly 14 years removed from his last visit, former Masters champ Mike Weir hasn’t forgotten his favourite Winnipeg moments.

“Lots of good (memories), my Canadian Tour days,” Weir said this week in advance of his trip here Sunday and Monday for the fourth annual Mike Weir Miracle Golf Drive For Kids. “I remember having too many beers with Davey McMillan, that’s one for sure.

“And I remember the golf courses being fun, Breezy Bend and Pine Ridge, that one with the crazy ninth hole.”

Not even a future major champion had every shot in Winnipeg turn out as planned. The last time he was here, he missed the cut at the 1996 Manitoba Open won by then-amateur Rob McMillan.

But the low point?

“Yeah, one bad memory, that I had a chance to win (the 1994 Open at Pine Ridge) and Scott Dunlap came from behind and nipped me and I made a few bogeys coming in,” Weir said. “I think I had a two-shot lead and I tried to drive that par-4 (the 13th) and I hit one in the trees right in front of the tee and made a double bogey.

“It was just such an immature, dumb move to try to do that at that stage of the tournament. I had the lead; I didn’t need to to that. It was a good learning experience from a dumb play. Not a fond memory, though.”

At Sunday night’s pre-game party and Monday’s action on St. Charles Country Club, Weir will help formulate some new memories.

Those figure to be nothing short of sensational, given that the Miracle Golf Drive For Kids has already generated $2 million for childrens’ health-care causes in Canada in just three years.

“There are so many great things about it,” Weir said about the previous events in London, Ont., Saskatoon and Halifax. “What I see from these children is that they have such great attitudes even despite the struggles they’re going through.

“They have incredible spirit and they’re just happy. That’s the thing that sticks with me when we do these events, visit the children’s hospitals.

“The parents? They’re so happy that I’m there and I’m more touched by the experience than they are for sure. That’s the wonderful thing about it.”

Weir showered praise on volunteers and organizers of his charity days.

“There are so many people with big hearts that give a lot of money and give a lot of time,” he said. “I have a lot of appreciation for the people that put on these events. I just show up and do the event but behind the scenes there is a lot of work that goes into them.”

On the PGA Tour for a 12th year, the member of the Order of Canada and the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame continues to search for a new consistency. He has eight career victories, but none since 2007.

And that search continues right through a milestone birthday. He turned 40 three weeks ago.

“No, not a big deal at all,” Weir laughed. “I don’t even think about it. My wife threw a surprise party, had some friends up, about 15 guys (for) a guys’ weekend. Other than that, it’s just kind of blown by and I didn’t even think about it.”

His birthday was cause for some pundits to write him off. Earlier this season, a major publication’s online roundtable proclaimed he was washed up and wouldn’t win again.

“I didn’t see that but I don’t take any offence,” Weir said. “I haven’t been playing that well so I’m sure people are going to say that. It’s just part of the deal, being a professional athlete; you live with the good and bad.”

This season, he has posted just one top-10 in 12 tournaments and slipped down to No. 62 in the world golf rankings.

But his 2008 and 2009 were hardly poor. In those two years, Weir had 14 top-10s and was sixth and 29th in the final FedEx Cup standings. He won more than US$5 million in that period.

“Yeah, I did do everything but win the last couple of years,” Weir said. “I was close a few times. They were two of my better years, but I just didn’t get a W. That’s always the end goal. They were good years but not great years because I didn’t get a win.

“I’m still working towards that again.”

The men’s team title was won by Université Laval.

“I was quite happy (with) how the men’s team rebounded from a tough second round in the rain and rallied to make the Top 10,” Bisons golf co-coach Garth Goodbrandson said in a release. “The women’s team also had a good tournament and played really solid throughout the three rounds.”

The tournament, in its eighth year, included 20 men’s teams and 10 women’s teams.
