U of M Bisons golf teams place 6th, 9th in national championship

Friday, August 6th, 2010

WINNIPEG – The University of Manitoba Bisons women’s golf team posted its best finish in four years while the men’s team cracked the top 10 at the the 2010 Canadian University/College Championship in Fredericton, NB.

The Bisons women’s team tied for sixth while the men’s team placed ninth in the tournament which wrapped up after three rounds as the fourth and final round was cancelled Thursday due to foul weather.

Leading the women’s team was third-year Sarah Stebeleski who placed 19th overall in the third round shooting a 12-over 84 for a 246 (30-over) total score. First-year Lindsay Stewart fired a nine-over 81 for a total score of 251 (35-over) and 22nd overall placing. Fifth-year Lauren Rousseau tied for 31st with her score of 87 in the third round and overall score of 261 (45-over) while third-year Anne Thorimbert shot a third-round 93 and tied for 42nd place with an overall score of 272 (56-over). Second-year Chelsea Hummelt shot a 90 in the third round and placed 46th overall with a total score of 275 (59-over).

There were 52 competitors in the women’s field with the team championship title won by the University of British Columbia.

In men’s action, third-year Bobby Wiebe recorded Manitoba’s lowest round firing a 71 (1-under) which included five birdies in the third round. He and Bisons first-year player Ryan Pitzel tied for 39th overall with a 226 (10-over) total score. Pitzel and second-year Riley Unger each shot a 77 in the third round. Unger and Bisons Burke Wiebe, who shot a 76, tied for 49th with total scores of 229.

The men’s team title was won by Université Laval.

“I was quite happy (with) how the men’s team rebounded from a tough second round in the rain and rallied to make the Top 10,” Bisons golf co-coach Garth Goodbrandson said in a release. “The women’s team also had a good tournament and played really solid throughout the three rounds.”

The tournament, in its eighth year, included 20 men’s teams and 10 women’s teams.

Speirs one step from his 3rd U.S. Open

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

He’s at the point in his career where his feel for a golf course helps him set the right targets.

In one-day events or qualifying scenarios, Winnipeg’s Adam Speirs proved again this week he knows how to figure it out.

Speirs shot three-under-par 68 at Memphis’s Ridgeway Country Club and earned one of the five spots to advance to next month’s sectional (final) qualifying stage for the U.S. Open to be played later in June at Pebble Beach.

“Oh, I don’t know,” Speirs said about his one-day successes. “Now, I think I’m better at them because I’ve done it a few times. I do have a sense of what it’s going to take on a one-day outing.

“When I first turned pro, I’d always think it’s going to be five- or six-under at any site, but often it’s just a couple under and that’s a comfort level for me. I don’t get nervous. I’ve been through that nervousness as a young player.”

Advancing through one of the 111 local qualifying events, Speirs now has an entry at one of 15 sectional qualifying tournaments in early June. He’ll play 36-hole day at Portland, Ore., to try to gain an entry to his third U.S. Open.

He earned his way into fields previously in 2002 at Bethpage and 2007 at Oakmont.

The field of 9,052 U.S. Open entries has now been whittled down. Since only 63 players are exempt for the Open, 93 spots will be available from the final stage of qualifying.

As well as his credentials at earning previous Open spots, Speirs also had a big one-day triumph last summer, winning a pro-am and setting a course record with a 61 at his home club, St. Charles.

TEN years into the endeavour, the University of Manitoba golf team has provided numerous opportunities where none previously existed.

Unfunded by the school, the program is ready to conduct a third annual Bison Fund-Raising tournament Wednesday at Elmhurst as it tries to balance an annual budget of between $60,000 and $75,000.

“We’re just finishing the 10th year and I think the perception is that we’ve been there 10 years, we’re doing great,” said founding team coach Garth Goodbrandson. “But it’s always been kind of a year-to-year thing.

“We’ve never been able to look ahead five years.”

The program, though, has gained name recognition and stability.

Recently, a hefty annual grant from the RCGA Foundation has helped immensely to cover the cost of practice and tournament appearances.

“We like to take to two (men’s) teams to tournaments because we’re about opportunities,” said Goodbrandson, who’s now being assisted by local CPGA member Ed Boge in the wake of co-founder Derek Ingram’s promotion to head coach of Canada’s national women’s golf team.

The men’s team usually plays six fall tournaments through Wisconsin, Minnesota and at Fargo, and the women’s team five tournaments.

On May 30, both men and women leave for the Canadian University/College Championships at Fredericton’s Kingswood Park.

“That’s a $15,000 trip alone but it caps off our year and the event gives university golf in Canada so much more respect,” Goodbrandson said. “The quality of the event has improved so much since the first year, six or seven years ago. They do this one up right.”

Wednesday’s fund-raising tournament, expected to include 27 teams in the scramble/shotgun format, has become an important event on the team’s calendar, too.

“Elmhurst, they’ve been fantastic to us,” Goodbrandson said. “A tournament like this, it’s hard to get off the ground and raise money but the club… donates the green fees back to the team, gives us a real running start at success.

“And Manitoba Lotteries, as our presenting sponsor for a third straight year, is there for us in a big way, too. They’ve helped the team tremendously.”
