Gobin takes home Joyce Collier Award

Monday, April 19th, 2010

Brodie Gobin has joined an impressive list of former and current junior golfers at the Portage Golf Club, as the St. Claude resident is the 2009 recipient of the Joyce Collier Junior Golf Award.

The award is presented each year to a junior player at the club who best fits a number of criteria, including good sportsmanship, improved handicap, good etiquette, regular participation in junior events at the club, as well as a good attitude.

The 12th winner of the prestigious award, Gobin was selected after a great 2009 competitive season that saw him place well in a handful of Golf Manitoba events.

“It feels good, and it’s a real honour,” Gobin said after learning he had been selected, noting he’s thrilled to be in the company of several great young players who have taken home the award in the past.

“He, of course, exemplifies all of the traits that the Joyce Collier Junior Golf Award is all about,” said PGC junior chair man Preston Meier, who also thanked Collier on behalf of the club’s junior committee for her continuing support of young players at the course.

Gobin said the highlight of his summer was a fourth-place finish at the Manitoba Blue Cross Men’s Rural Amateur Championship, held at the Minnedosa Country Club in August.

The youngster fired rounds of 75 and 74 in the two-day event to finish at five-over-par, just three shots back of winner Rob Hall from Shilo.

“That was my best finish of the year, and I played really well that weekend,” said Gobin. “Everything was working good for me there.”

Gobin also put together an impressive finish at the Manitoba Blue Cross Junior Men’s Rural Championship. Carding an 83 and a 79 at the South Interlake Golf and Country Club, Gobin placed in a tie for eighth among the competitive field.

He was also the 2009 Portage Golf Club junior champion, finishing the 36-hole event at 10-over.

One tournament that he’ll be looking for a better result at in 2010 will be at the Manitoba Men’s Junior Championship, as Gobin wasn’t so satisfied with a 35th place finish at this year’s event at the Rossmere Country Club.

Golf Round Up

Saturday, June 6th, 2009

Two players, born 31 years apart, share the opening-round lead at the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship in Lethbridge. Nineteen-year-old Graham Baillargeron of Mississauga, Ontario and 50-year-old Garth Collings of Winnipeg each shot four-under 67’s. Collings’ effort sparked Manitoba into the lead in the Willingdon Cup inter-provincial team competition. Saskatchewan is 18 strokes off their pace going into today’s final round of team play. David Stewart of Prince Albert carded a 78.

Elsewhere, match play in nine flights starts today at Waskesiu in the Junior Men’s Lobstick. Jesse Gibson and Chris Schneider tied for medallist honours with 72. Meanwhile, the 11 entries in the Junior Women’s division will play a second round of medal play today. Breanna White leads after an opening round 80. Plus, 16-year-old Travis Jenkins of Prince Albert was part of the eight-member Canadian team that finished second in the recent International Junior Golf Team Invitational in Mexico. The four-round event featured best ball and alternate shot team matches, plus singles matches. Canada finished second, one point ahead of the U-S with Mexico third.
