Pine Valley Golf Course of Clementon, New Jersey
September 21st, 2010
Mention “Pine Valley” to any serious group of golfers and no explanation is needed. After all “The Pine Valley” Golf Range of Clementon New Jersey has been consistently rated at the top and one of the premier golf courses on the globe. Indeed in its determinations and awards, the premier golfing journal “Golf Magazine”, has awarded Pine Valley in its number one spot as the very top golf course in the United States and indeed the world. This said, it is often stated by the most experienced and determined golfers that if there is a more difficult golf course to be played anywhere in the world, then these golfing aficionados would not want to know about it,or have the distinct pleasure of being offered to play that set of golfing links.
Pine Valley Golf Course’s history goes back to 1912 when a wealthy hotelier named Mr. George Arthur Crump decided that he wanted to build a golf course that would be worthy of his name and reputation. He chose an area of land that was basically a forest in a swamp surrounded by sand. Crumps’ dream took fully seven years to build and complete. It actually incorporated and included the removal of approximately twenty thousand tree stumps. Ultimately and unfortunately for the innovator and creator of the project Mr. Crump he only lived to see the completion of only 14 holes on this golfing masterpiece. The remaining tees – holes 12 though were 15 were completed some time after his passing. How unfortunate.
It can be truly and truthfully said that Pine Valley has no two golf holes that are even remotely similar. The distinctness of the course and layout is one of the greatest attractions of this fine golfing course of world wide global renown. However it can be said that if there is one distinctiveness and binding feature to the whole course and setup – it is the sand. Mounds and myriads of sand to work through and impede the play and follow through of the game of even the most advanced and experienced golfers. Indeed the expanses of sand are large, great and extreme in size and nature that no attempt is even made by the groundskeepers to even rake them. No doubt an impediment to even Professional golfers and those near their class.
One day yet as a golfer you may live your dream of actually playing through and golfing the Pine Valley golf course of Clementon New Jersey. Fore!

Return of ‘Original Six’
September 18th, 2010
One of the tournament’s founders, Laurie Artiss of Qualicum Beach, B.C., was on hand for the 50th, as were Winnipeg’s Ed Dearden, Clear Lake’s Bob Cornell, Brandon’s Gerry MacKay, Calgary’s Wayne Hannay and Virden’s Paul Stewart.
Grey Owl president Rick Locke of Portage said the journey back in time made for a special weekend.
“It was great to have Laurie Artiss there,” Locke said. “His presence was very much appreciated, and he went down memory lane for the participants with his speech at the Howl (the tournament banquet).”
Also at Friday night’s Howl the Grey Owl committee recognized all of its Honour Award winners, who have contributed to the success of the tournament, as well as the Labatt reps who have given so much to the event over the years through their sponsorship.
The tournament committee, expecting a larger than normal turnout, expanded the field to a record 340 golfers this year. It was a good move, because the 50th attracted many former competitors who hadn’t taken part in recent years and resulted in nearly 400 applicants.
The weather was cool and damp for the first two days of the three-day event, but the sun came out on Sunday as champions were crowned in several categories at the picturesque, 18-hole layout in Riding Mountain National Park.
“It was highly successful,” Locke said. “The weather was a little suspect, but all participants played in somewhat trying conditions and it turned out to be very successful. I heard a number of great comments from the golfers.”
Brandon’s Jarod Crane held off eight-time champion Garth Collings of Breezy Bend for his first Grey Owl title. Crane shot rounds of 71-68 to edge Collings, who fired 73-68, by two strokes.
Seven-time winner Jim Scissons of Saskatoon, this year’s winner of the Grey Owl’s Honour Award, carded rounds of 75 on Saturday and 69 on Sunday to capture his third straight Greyer Owl crown for those age 60 and over. Scissons is 68 years old and nearly shot his age on Sunday.
And since the tournament was created by members of the Manitoba sporting press, there has always been a Media Flight at the Grey Owl. This year’s winner was Steve Johnston of Winnipeg radio station QX104. He fired rounds of 74 and 83 to win by five strokes over former CBC Winnipeg sports director Mike Beauregard.
Locke said the Grey Owl has persevered, while others have not, for several reasons.
“We announce the players, we post the scores … everybody is recognized,” he said. “It’s like a professional tournament, and us regular golfers appreciate that. In addition, it’s a reunion for many of our participants.
“And, of course, the course is fantastic as well.”
The 51st annual Grey Owl will be held June 10-12, 2011.
SEEKING ENTRY: Men’s amateur qualifying takes place on Thursday and Saturday at two Manitoba courses.
Sixty-nine golfers, including former Manitoba junior champion Kevin Giesbrecht, will hit the links at South Interlake Golf and Country Club near Warren on Thursday, and another 61 will take to the track on Saturday. Another 15 will compete at Oak Island Golf in Oak Lake on Saturday.
A percentage of top finishers at both courses will qualify for the Nott Autocorp men’s amateur championship at Breezy Bend, July 19-22.
YOUNG GUNS: The provincial junior bantam championships will be contested at Tuxedo Golf Course this Saturday and Sunday.
Thirteen boys and five girls will compete in the 36-hole tournament, which is open to those age 14 and under.

Take nothing for GRANITE If you like your fun mixed with a healthy dose of fear, head for the Hills
September 15th, 2010
No one who has played this beauty of a golf course just 20 minutes north of Lac du Bonnet comes away disappointed, except, probably, with their score.
“I think it’s the best course in Manitoba, period,” says general manager Ada Vandersteen (who also admits to some bias). “And a lot of the pros who have played here say the same thing.”
It’s tough to argue that. Granite Hills has the elevation changes of a Morden or Neepawa, more lake holes than Hecla, more damn trees than are called for and huge, amazing hunks of Canadian Shield granite. “Every hole is different here,” says Vandersteen. “There’s not a boring minute.”
Case in point is the 545-yard par-5 third that doglegs left along the lake. It’s similar to the 18th at Pebble Beach, minus the drop-to-your-death vertical to the beach. Although it is a very nice hole, it ain’t so tough (see right).
How to eagle the monster 3rd (on a calm day)
Pull out the Thunderstick and vaporize a drive down the left-centre. Sizzle a flawless 3-iron about 10 feet short of the green, which has a front-left pin. Use deft touch on an elegantly played 9-iron to chip it in.
Set and stay a spell
This is a course so nice you should play it twice. If you make the 90-minute drive up from Winnipeg, consider an overnighter and 36 holes. There are cabin rentals at Granite Recreational Park and SCSK Rentals, both on Cape Coppermine Road, and Trail End Camp in Point du Bois. In town, you have the Drifters Inn, Glen Howard Inn and Lakeview Inn. Campers will be happy at Champagnes RV Park.
The hit
Weekday green fees are $34 (Monday to Thursday). Half a cart is $17.
Weekend rates apply Friday to Sunday and carts are mandatory these days. $57 covers it. Senior rates are in effect Monday to Thursday.
Getting there
Granite Hills is located approximately 90 minutes northeast of Winnipeg. From Winnipeg take Highway 59 north to Highway 44. Proceed east on Highway 44 to Highway 11 and turn north to Lac du Bonnet. From Lac du Bonnet take PTH 313 east to PR 433 (Lee River Road) and follow the signs, approximately 14 kilometres to the golf course located on Cape Coppermine Road.
The numbers
Par 72; four sets of men’s tees maxing out at 7,082 yards and a slope rating from 118 to 140. Two sets of women’s tees with slopes of 129 and 138.
“A lot of women are afraid to play here,” says Vandersteen. “But they shouldn’t be. Women hit it straighter than men.”
Course record is even-par 72, so this beast has yet to be tamed. You could be the one.
Any numbskulls out there?
Was anyone else out there fool enough to play on Tuesday, May 25, the day a wind warning (blasts up to 90 km/h) was issued? Our clueless foursome played Bridges. It was hilarious. Balls were blowing off the tee, putts started moving without being putted. On the par-3 13th, about 140 yards, one guy, thinking we were sheltered, hit an 8-iron. It looked good until about halfway there, when it rose above the tree line. Then it zoomed straight up and started coming back at us. The net result was a 30-yard shot.
Pro shop staff said apart from us, there was but a twosome on the course.
Four-wheeled menace
Used to be the biggest danger one faced on the links was being drilled in the head by an errant shot. Or busting a club on a tree root and having the shaft pierce your jugular. Or stepping on a rake. Not that these unfortunate occurrences are now to be completely discounted, but according to the New York Times the biggest threat to physical well-being on the golf course is now the power cart.
Says the Times… “The Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, reported in 2008 that nearly 148,000 cart-related injuries occurred between 1990 and 2006, with those injuries rising to nearly 13,500 in 2006, from about 5,700 in 1990. The figures included cart-related injuries away from the golf course because the vehicles are increasingly being used in other settings. Still, 70 per cent of the injuries took place at recreational and sports facilities.”
It stands to reason those statistics would apply, proportionately, to Canada. So, next time you hit the links, consider walking.

Junior Jesse Skelton rules in club champions golf
September 7th, 2010
This has been a banner season for young Skelton who has just started Grade 12 at Winnipeg’s Silver Heights Collegiate. Earlier this summer, he won his first Manitoba Junior Golf Championship plus two other junior tournaments.
Skelton’s 68 was the lowest individual score recorded over the two rounds at the par 72 Links layout. With a year of junior eligibility still remaining, he looked like a future professional in the men’s field composed of golfers of all ages.
The PGA tour, however, is not on his agenda.
After high school, I plan to go to the University of British Columbia to study architecture, he said. Golf is primarily a hobby, but I would like to be one of the best amateurs in Canada. And you can play year-round in B.C.
Skelton’s caddy was his father Rik while another youthful competitor — B.J. Neufeld, the Links club champion — enlisted father Chris to tote the bag. Although the Neufelds are notable mostly as a curling dynasty, B.J finished a respectable fourth, with scores of 77 and 75 for a 152 total.
Allan Wheeler, of Rossmere, and Keith Fawcett, of Selkirk, were first and second, respectively, in the senior men?s division.
The women’s provincial club champion was Judi Lidstone, of Elmhurst, with rounds of 72-77-149. Alicia Michalchuk, of Larters, was runner-up, while former Matlock cottager Noreen Stewart. of Southwood, took the senior ladies title edging Anette Durica, of Niakwa.
Lidstone’s performance showed her familiarity with the Gimli course. The former Winnipeg and District ladies titlist had previously played at Links in Manitoba Mixed Championships.
The course is in good shape and there are big improvements every time I come out here, Lidstone said. ?The only drawback is that the greens are slower than in the city.
The criticism of the greens was echoed by Skelton.
They were so slow that it was hard to putt, he said. Maybe they don?t cut them down enough.
Besides Neufeld and Fawcett, there were nine other Interlake golfers competing in the club champions tournament.
They were Ted Chop, Links; James Rousse, Bernie Majewski, both South Interlake; Kelly Burnett, Teulon; Rob Erickson, Selkirk; Beverly Sigurdson, Hecla; Cely Santos, South Interlake; and Bev Ostash and Charlene Fox, both Selkirk.

Mogg has eye of the Tiger Teaching pro who might be Woods’ next swing guru visits Pine Ridge
September 4th, 2010
Mogg’s name surfaced recently on a Sports Illustrated list of candidates to succeed the recently departed Hank Haney as Tiger’s swing and golf guru.
Among the eight names other than Tiger’s own, Mogg was listed at 30-1, while Canadian Sean Foley seems to be the consensus favourite at this point.
Mogg wasn’t shy about the possibilities on Tuesday.
“Delicately, humbly, because I’ve been with John Cook for a long, long time, and because I teach a mile away from Isleworth and I’ve got a lot of Isleworth members and because I’m with Nike, I would imagine it’s not a big stretch to say, if Tiger’s going to choose a coach — and that’s a big word, if — I would likely be on the short list because of all of those factors,” Mogg said.
“And, I’ve spent a decent amount of time with Tiger in the past. Common sense is I’d probably be on some short list and whether there’s truth to it or not, we’ll have to wait and see.”
Other than time constraints due to his thriving teaching business based in Orlando, Mogg sounded like he wouldn’t shy away from the challenge.
“I’ve spent enough time with Tiger, not in the near past but in the past, (that) I understand what he wants and how he would operate should he hire another coach,” he said.
“The reality is that Tiger right now needs friends around him and he’s not going to go hire a coach right now because he’s been burned from a trust standpoint from all the scandals and all that happened.
“So to hire a coach, someone he doesn’t know, barely knows or might know a little bit, he’s not going to do that. Maybe I’d be a little higher up the trust factor than some of the other guys he just flat doesn’t know, but to invite someone into his inner circle right now — that’s why he’s not going to hire a coach right now.”
Mogg seems certain that Woods will go it alone for a while while he tries to get his game and his life back on track.
“If I had to go get a golf lesson from somebody right now, he’d be one of the guys I would call,” Mogg said. “His eye is that good. He’s awesome.
“I would digress and say I don’t like what he did with Hank. He’s gotten off track for the last five or six years mechanically. But in terms of an eye, and I’ve been around him and when I worked with John Cook and Tiger’s come up, he’s had some great comments to make.”
Mogg has been a frequent visitor to Winnipeg in the past. His grandmother was from St. James and the former PGA Tour player used to be a regular at the Canadian Tour stop here. He likely still holds the local record for consecutive cuts made, 14, at the Manitoba Open/MTS Classic.
The native of Tacoma, Wash., enthralled the Canadian Tour event sponsors Tuesday with swing tips on the range and tour stories — a particularly good one was about Tiger vs. Phil at table tennis — over lunch.
He’s taken an unusual route to a reputation among the elite teachers in the game. It’s rare a tour player evolves into instruction at such a high level.
“Falling into teaching after playing the Tour for several years, I don’t really view it as teaching, I view it as helping people,” Mogg said. “Some of it is technical, some of it is mechanical and some of it is hugely more mental or preparation.
“When you’re helping people, it doesn’t feel like you’re working.”
Having worked with the likes of John Cook, Bart Bryant, Skip Kendall, D.A. Points, Joey Sindelar and even former MTS Classic champ Lee Williamson, Mogg is currently enjoying new-found status after one of his clients, Korean Y.E. Yang, beat Woods for the PGA Championship last August.
“Every victory has been cool,” he said of the 22 tour wins he can claim by his players. “After 21 of these victories, Y.E.’s victory at the PGA is equal to or surpasses the others combined, and that’s not to knock the John Cook wins and things like that.
“The hoopla, the attention, the uniqueness that he’s the first Asian, the first to take Tiger down, the first that he came from behind to take Tiger down and how that’s reverberated throughout the golf community and the world, that one victory alone, the attention, hoopla, recognition, has surpassed everything else that ever happened for me.”

Annual Mayor’s Golf tournament and Family Fun Day recognized nationally by Canadian Tire
August 31st, 2010
“We are so lucky that we have the very best team to pull such an event together every year.”
Since This Week has so many youth carriers, this is a great way to give back to families in the community, she added.
Ms Babcock was in good company as the other awards went to the Manitoba government for supplying bags full of sports equipment and two groups of Canadian Tire employees who started fundraising programs for JumpStart, including climbing Mount Kilimanjaro.
“As a community newspaper, we’re delighted to organize an event that benefits local youth through the Canadian Tire JumpStart Program and that partners with local municipal leaders,” adds publisher Bruce Danford.
All three area Canadian Tire operators attended the award ceremony — Craig Salkeld and Marcus Weinbrecht, associate dealers from both Peterborough stores and general manager John Fox from the Lindsay store. All three say they are proud to see so many children helped by the money that is raised here and stays here.
“It’s an exceptional honour,” Mr. Weinbrecht says.
“It’s a very select group so it’s a very big deal for Peterborough This Week to get this award. It’s a reflection of the work that Mary Babcock and Kirtus Evoy put in to support JumpStart. As a business partner, we’re thrilled to work with them and we’ll work together for years to come.”
Mr. Salkeld expressed his thanks for the many hours of work put in by This Week’s staff to support a program that puts kids into recreation programs.
“I’ve been in other markets and have never seen an outside partner get so involved,” he adds.
Mr. Fox was also pleased to see This Week recognized for its fundraisers.
“We have a lot of respect for Mary and the team at This Week,” he says.
“They’ve been great partners to work with. The award is long overdue and well-deserved.”

Golfers out in full force to see Weir
August 27th, 2010
Teams of players flooded the MacKenzie and Ross Nines early this morning for 18 holes of action. Sunday night at a kick-off reception, four groups successfully bid to play a few holes with Weir today.
Later in the morning, 18 local professionals and 54 kids assembled at St. Charles to participate in the nine-hole Safeway Junior pro-am.
All the players got to meet and have their photos taken with Weir before starting their event.
“That was exciting meeting him, shaking his hand and taking pictures with him,” said Brynn Todd, 12. “I just said hi, but it was so exciting.”
Todd was one of the lucky junior members at St. Charles who won a draw to play in the pro-am. Other juniors around the area earned their spots in club competitions or in contests.
“This was so cool to meet someone in the pros and on TV and to see that you actually get to meet him,” Todd added. “This will be fun but I’m nervous, too.”
Weir, who was a junior obsessed with golf long before he ever won a major championship, hit the first shot of the pro-am and spoke to the juniors, pros and parents assembled around the first tee at St. Charles’ Woods Nine.”Keep working hard,” Weir said. “Because you never know what can happen.”
The fund raising-day continues with a clinic by Weir this afternoon, then tonight’s gala dinner at the Ft. Garry hotel.

Youth-senior golf tournament planned
August 24th, 2010
Teenagers might seem ?scary,? but that doesn?t make them bad people, said Wideen. They?re finding their own identity, just like adults did when they were growing up, she said.
Wideen would like to be able to pair seniors and youth on teams.
There are plenty of seniors who golf, and there?s a push to increase the number of youth golfers, she said.
Wideen is still working out the details but hopes that the event won?t cost participants any money. She is attempting to line up sponsors.
If there is a cost, anyone who couldn?t afford to participate otherwise would be subsidized, she said.
Anyone 50-plus or 17 and under can sign up for the event, said Wideen. For information or to register, call FCSS (485-2192) and ask for Wideen or Ashley Fath.
Sign up sheets are also to be available at the golf course, senior centre, County Central High School, and perhaps other places around town, said Wideen. Watch out for flyers for further information.
Participants are to meet at 1 p.m. on June 3, with a buffet to follow nine holes of golf.
?I think it?ll be a lot of fun,? said Wideen.
